In the events of two dogs fighting you need to try and separate them as soon as possible whilst not putting yourself at risk.  A number of people can get quite badly injured themselves whilst trying to separate pets.

If your dog has been in a fight, then he/she will need assessing for injuries.  Bite wounds can be hard to see as they may be hidden by fur.  Always check over the whole dog, but pay particular attention to the head/neck as this is often where most injuries may occur.

It is generally best to get your pet checked by a vet if you feel there are injuries as even apparently small wounds can often become very infected after bites.

We are grateful to Gerty’s owners for allowing us to photograph her during her recovery.
“Gerty” is an elderly female Jack Russell Terrier that presented to vet Julie Whitehead as an emergency late one night after having been attacked badly by another dog.  The resulting fight subjected Gerty to some horrific skin injuries.

On examination it became very apparent that Gerty was in serious shock and a lot of pain from her injuries.  She was immediately placed on a drip and given painkillers before Julie could begin to assess the extent of her injuries...
