Street Vet and Bilton Vets Charity Open Day

30th June 2019

As you may be aware, we had an Open Day this month to help raise money for the charity StreetVet ; a charity which helps provide support, treatment and education for homeless pet owners. Since StreetVet has been created, over 450 street dogs (and some cats and rabbits), have been vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, had pain relief prescribed and had surgeries performed.

Our open day was a massive success and we have managed to raise a massive £655 and this is all down to your generosity with your many donations.

Firstly, we would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has donated money and has supported our open day by coming or by sharing the word about it happening, as without your help we would not have been able to raise the tremendous amount that we have done for this much needed charity.

Another thank you goes to all who generously donated amazing prizes to our raffle. These included:

  • Emma Bearman , for the canine photography photoshoot worth £100!

  • Royal Canin , Kong and Fish4Dogs , who kindly donated a variety of dog tins, toys and food to make up the cat and dog hampers.

We have drawn the raffle and contacted the winners already. Congratulations to all who won and we hope you and your furry friends enjoy your prizes!

The Day...

As the Open Day was to be held after a very busy morning surgery, we were dubious as to whether we would finish on time! Vet Tom came in extra early and performed some emergency vet duties when he wasn’t supposed to, and luckily with all the rest of the staff’s help, we managed to get the place spick and span in no time and set up for the day.

We had various stations for the day including,

  • A donation table
  • Face painting,
  • Teddy bear surgery,
  • Various old-fashioned games such as; mouse trap, pinball and win a bottle,
  • Popular practice tours
  • ...and of course, a cake sale!

We also had a special celebrity guest appearance from “ Waffle the wonder dog ” who came to take photos with all of his fans. A huge thank you to Sue McCabe at A1 Animals and Waffle for making this happen, it was the icing on the cake and much appreciated by all – (some of the staff were more start struck than the children!)

All of this however would not have been possible without the dedication and willingness from the staff at Bilton. The final thank you is to those who took their time to come along on the day to make it run as smooth as possible.

The Charity...

All the proceeds from the open day, will go to the amazing charity, Street Vet.

StreetVet was born in 2016, inspired by the incredible bond between a homeless man and his dog! Victims of the UK homelessness epidemic often have scant support, except for, in a growing number of cases, the companionship of their pets. Some have had their pets since before losing their homes. Others had the responsibility of pet ownership thrust upon them. Irrespective, the bond between many homeless people and their dogs is profound, such that their pets’ well-being is a life-shaping priority. Now our ever increasing number of volunteers can help, by providing accessible fundamental vet care.

In the second of her series looking at the role of animals in war, vet nurse Meg Gardner looks at life in the trenches for the men and dogs of Twenty-two Company King’s Fusiliers. An uncompromising tale of life on the front line in 1916, as told from the perspective of the dogs who lived and worked alongside the soldiers of the British Forces. A tale of loyalty and friendship, hardship and loss. As both men and dogs face the horrors of warfare, an unexpected arrival in the trenches shows both dogs and men the value of compassion.

Animals coming to the vets can often be very stressed and anxious and this can have a negative effect on the pet, the veterinary team and the pet's owners. Trying to reduce this fear can lead to a better outcome for everybody involved and medication often forms part of this process.
