Riding for the Disabled Christmas Charity

The Riding for the Disabled Association

22nd November 2018

Every year, our practice picks a charity that we support with a variety of fundraisers. This year it was a unanimous decision to support the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).

The horses and ponies at the RDA provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK.

Their network of 500 volunteer groups organise activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting, showjumping and Hippotherapy to over 25,000 people each year. They have been carrying out our life-changing activities for almost 50 years, and take great pride in the exceptional standard of their coaches and volunteers (18,000 in all).

They offer activities for all age groups and, wherever possible, to people with any disability – and you’re just as likely to find an RDA Group in an urban setting as a rural one.

They rely on voluntary help, donations and legacies to deliver all their services.

How are we helping?

All the staff have contributed items for our Christmas Hamper Raffle. Tickets are available from reception now and only cost £1. We shall be making the drawer slightly later this year (mid January) and one lucky winner will get our fabulous hamper. The hamper contains lovely goodies for both pets and owners alike!

ALL the proceeds from the raffle will be going to the RDA charity.

In the second of her series looking at the role of animals in war, vet nurse Meg Gardner looks at life in the trenches for the men and dogs of Twenty-two Company King’s Fusiliers. An uncompromising tale of life on the front line in 1916, as told from the perspective of the dogs who lived and worked alongside the soldiers of the British Forces. A tale of loyalty and friendship, hardship and loss. As both men and dogs face the horrors of warfare, an unexpected arrival in the trenches shows both dogs and men the value of compassion.

Animals coming to the vets can often be very stressed and anxious and this can have a negative effect on the pet, the veterinary team and the pet's owners. Trying to reduce this fear can lead to a better outcome for everybody involved and medication often forms part of this process.
