  • Up to £5,000 Relocation Allowance
  • Up to £5,000 Welcome Bonus

About Us...

The BIlton Veterinary Centre is the oldest established practice in Rugby, having been formed over 75 years ago.   Originally a mixed practice, we became small animal focused about 10 years ago.

We have recently become part of the Independent Vet Care family of practices and so we are welcoming all the benefits and investments that this can bring!

Our Team and Interests

Currently we have a great team of seven Veterinary Surgeons and nine fully qualified Veterinary Nurses.  Our vets have particular interests in Orthopaedics, Soft Tissue Surgery, Ophthalmology, Imaging, Cardiology & Internal Medicine

Our single site practice offers ample opportunities for case discussions and second opinions from within our experienced vet team, whilst still maintaining individual case continuity.

We really encourage our staff to follow their interests and build up their own area of expertise.  Case and client continuity is of paramount importance.

Our Facilities

We work out of single site and so there is no branch work.  We have five consulting rooms, large main waiting area and a specific cat waiting room.  We also have separate cat kennels, a separate large dog kennels and even a separate small furry kennel too!

We recently moved to Merlin PMS, which is the updated version of Voyager/Jupiter.

We have two dedicated sterile theatres, and two dental/dirty stations too.  Along with the usual equipment we have also invested in:

  • Digital AGFA Radiography
  • New IMS Digital Dental Radiography
  • ESOATE MyLab Ultrasound with Cardiac probes and full colour Doppler
  • Tonopen Ocular Tonometry and SlitLamp
  • IDEXX Catalyst Biochemistry and Procyte Haematology
  • ECG machine and IMEC multiparameter monitors
  • Four Humphrey ADE Anaesthetic Circuits
  • Gima Electrosurgical Unit

CPD, Training and Subscriptions

Further development of your skills and interests are important to us.  In order to help you progress we offer:

  • CPD Budget of £1200/year and up to 5 days available for further training.*
  • Our salary scale is currently above the SPVS average, and is commensurate with your experience.
  • Options for funding of certificates and further qualifications are available and encouraged.
  • We also will pay your VDS, BVA and the MRCVS memberships for you.

*Pro-rata for PART-TIME employees based on hours worked.

Rotas, Holidays, and Work-Life Balance.

We are a busy practice and so your case load will be varied and interesting!  The clinical directors have strived to try and genuinely achieve a good work-life balance  in what can be a highly stressful profession.

The full time vets currently work a 40 hour week, over four days.  We usually try and ensure that you have the same day off each week to allow for non-work planning!  We also have one day a week where you finish at 6.00pm.

The work rota is set up so that there are:

  • Standard 15 minute appointments with doubles for puppy vaccines, euthanasias and second opinions.
  • The last appointment at 6.15 to allow for time to finish up, phone calls etc  and to try to allow leaving on-time at 7.00pm!
  • Consulting blocks no longer than 2hrs at a time without a suitable catch-up point/break.
  • "Book-on-day" appointments throughout the day to try to prevent last minute double-booking or over booking.
  • An ops day once a week (your consults don't start until 4.30pm)
  • At least 1 or 2 other mornings to operate as well.
  • Set blocks of time "off-consults" ring-fenced for repeat prescriptions, phone calls, lab reports etc built into the diary.

For people considering PART-TIME hours, then we would adjust these working patterns around the times that you are able to work.

As well, you will benefit from:

  • 25 days holiday per year.*
  • A very supportive clinical team, and whilst case continuity is encouraged we do still all rely on each others advice and experiences.
  • A happy and friendly work atmosphere with a good "team-spirit".
  • An active social life with regular meals out, pub trips, cinema outings etc. (At least we did pre-COVID!)

*Pro-rata for PART-TIME employees based on hours worked.

On-Call, Emergency Work and Weekends

We have recently changed the way we provide OOH cover to our clients.

The phones go over to our OOH provider at 7pm on Weeknights and 1pm on Saturdays.  After these times, calls are diverted to Medivet Leamington Spa Veterinary Hospital.  We have a fantastic working relationship with this practice and our clients receive an excellent extension of care.

We can transfer in-patients to Vets Now (Coventry or Northampton) should we feel the need for continual monitoring, however, we are also happy to keep animals overnight if this is appropriate!  Our nursing team do the majority of the night-time checks until 10pm.   We feel this gives the best balance of patient care as animals are only moved if it is entirely beneficial for them.

At weekends, we have two vets working the morning surgery until 1pm Saturday, after which again we utilise Vets Now for any further urgent or emergency cases as well as any inpatients over the weekend.  One vet is allowed to leave at 1pm, the other remains (if necessary) for perform any ops/procedures that may have been admitted in the morning.  This second vet can leave as soon as everything is finished.  It is important to note that no new cases would come in after 1pm.

Weekend roles are:

  • 1 in 7 Saturday Mornings (until 1pm)
  • 1 in 7 Saturday Morning (until 4pm)

So this role does not require any OOH night duties or Weekend work generally beyond 4pm on Saturdays.
